If you’ve got a smart home that mostly works, you’ve probably developed a set of small rituals around it. Unplugging the camera in the side yard every few weeks. Restarting the router when the upstairs TV starts buffering. Opening the thermostat app twice because the first time it says “unavailable.”
Those rituals are a symptom, and almost every time we get called out for them, the devices turn out to be fine. The network underneath is the problem.
The three things actually going wrong
Your access point is too far away, through too much. WiFi does not care about your square footage; it cares about what’s between the radio and the device. Stucco with wire lath — which is most of Orange County’s housing stock — is genuinely hostile to a 5 GHz signal. So is a plaster wall, a refrigerator, a mirror, or a floor. A router in the front office covering a back bedroom two walls and a floor away is doing something much harder than the box’s coverage rating implied.
Your mesh nodes are talking to each other over the same air your devices use. This is the one that surprises people. In most consumer mesh systems, the satellite units relay traffic back to the main unit over WiFi. That relayed traffic competes for exactly the same airtime as your laptop and your TV. Every node you add to fix coverage takes another bite out of capacity. It’s why the third node so often makes things worse rather than better.
Everything is on one flat network. Your laptop, your kid’s game console, forty smart bulbs, eight cameras, a couple of TVs, and the guest phones all sharing one segment. Cheap IoT devices are chatty and badly behaved, and when a dozen of them decide to broadcast at once, the network slows for everything — and a camera that misses its keepalive window drops offline.
How to tell which one you have
A quick diagnostic you can run yourself, standing in the room where the problem happens:
- Run a speed test right next to the router, then in the problem room. If it falls off a cliff, it’s coverage.
- Test at 2am when the house is asleep. If everything is fine then but bad at 8pm, it’s congestion, not coverage.
- Count your connected devices. Most routers list them. If you’re past forty, you’re asking a consumer router to do something it wasn’t designed for.
- Watch whether problems cluster on one device type. All the cameras dropping but nothing else? That’s usually the flat-network problem, or PoE-less cameras on saturated WiFi.
What actually fixes it
The fix is unglamorous: put the access points where the coverage needs to be, and run a cable to each one.
A hardwired access point has the full backhaul of the Ethernet run behind it, so none of your wireless capacity is spent on nodes relaying to each other. Two properly placed wired access points routinely outperform five mesh nodes, and they keep outperforming them as you add devices.
The second half is segmentation. Cameras on their own VLAN, IoT devices on another, guests somewhere they can’t see anything, and your actual computers on a network that isn’t sharing airtime with forty light bulbs. This also closes a real security gap — a compromised smart plug on a flat network can see your file server; on its own segment it can’t.
When it isn’t the network
Sometimes it genuinely isn’t. If your ISP plan is 100 Mbps and four people are streaming 4K, no amount of access points will help. If a specific device drops and nothing else does, that device may just be failing. A decent installer will tell you that rather than selling you hardware — we do, regularly, and it costs us a sale roughly once a month.
But if the pattern is “several unrelated devices, in specific parts of the house, at specific times of day,” it’s the network. It’s essentially always the network.
